I am writing this blog to serve as a guide for renting individuals, group of people, or families in the area of C. Ayala street near the creek. I am hoping that no other victim of any lies will come after our experience.

I am presently renting in a house at C. Ayala St. just almost in front of the Solomon Hall of the St. Benilde school. This house owned by an old Land Lady living adjacent to us. We moved in this house for the main reason of avoiding menacing flood that we experienced from Ondoy in our house in Don Antonio. Secondly, we find it much economical and stress free to live in nearby house to our workplace and to my daughter’s school.

These are the things that we made clear from our hot-blooded Land Lady who’s means of communication is dominating at least 90% of your conversation and will tell you to let her finish before you try to say what you want to say. Yet when you try to talk, she wouldn’t even want you to finish. She made assurance that there is no problem when it comes to flood in that area and that any floods except the ones made by Ondoy are all manageable.

This is until when the start of the rainy season begins the other day. I wasn’t able to come home because all access to our street was heavily flooded. Considering that the rain was considered a normal rain that happens every rainy season especially during typhoon. So I tried to wait for the rain and flood to settle. The rain started to fade at about 12 midnight so i went through the manageable floods that already settled along L. Guinto and Singalong to reach St. Scholastica school. However, the both ends of Arellano St. at Estrada and P.Ocampo were heavily flooded that cars are having a hard time passing through.

So I waited inside my car until 3am hoping everything had settled. I saw that there’s almost no more cars passing by. The Estrada corner Arellano St. was still heavily flooded so I went to the other side via P.Ocampo and it was a relief to see that that side was already passable. So I drove through to Arellano to get to C. Ayala St. just in front of the Bulalo King, and to my surprise, our area was still flooded heavily that no cars can be seen parked along our street.

So I waited for more time hoping that the flood at Estrada cor Arellano and and C. Ayala would settle soon. I woke up from a nap inside my car at 6am and tried to see again, my heart was like jumping in joy to see that all of Arellano St. had settled and almost drying up. I told my self, that there is no way that C. Ayala will not be passable because the old Lady told us that that area has the best drainage system and a high ground and that the creek behind it never reaches the road during ordinary typhoons. Therefore, I told my self that finally I can be able to go home, and at least take a bath, change clothes, and go to work again even with less sleep.

But to my surprise, when I reached C.Ayala St. cor Arellano St., it was virtually disappointing to see that despite that the floods on rest of the street surrounding our area had settled and almost drying up, our area didn’t seem to have changed its level since the last 3 hours. Because of this, I was left with no other choice but to just go back to work, very dirty, with no sleep.

Then I texted my wife and told her that maybe she can just stay in the house and excuse herself from work this time because of the flood. But wife later replied that she walked through the flood because she had an important thing to do at work and it is very awkward to state the reason of flood to be unable to go to work when almost all areas are already passable. That is just crazy to think that all the assurances made by the old lady was just the total opposite. But the worse thing about this is that the flood in our area was in fact coming from the very dirty creek where all the garbage and all other dirty substance such as the rats and rat’s piss that gives people Leptospirosis that causes death to some people. The map here shows the area and the red colors and the dots indicates flood and its magnitude.

I brought the case to the attention of the Land Lady and as expected, she knew nothing but to deny everything she promised and worse she’s telling a different story that during those time while I was waiting the entire night inside my car, she said everything I saw never happened. She said that our street settled as fast as the rest of the streets settled from flood. I thought this is really outrageous and I expressed intention to cancel the contract and move to another house. But the greedy Land Lady threatened me that she will not return my two months deposit.

Now, we have seen a prospect house to move in to and the only thing left to deal with is with the old liar and greedy Land Lady. I told her she should not threaten us the way she did and the way I see how she tries to manipulate everything to her advantage but I simply made sure she gets my last message. “Please be reminded that we will not be bullied and we will be acting according to what is right.” We will see next…

Pacquiao will push through with his lawsuit against the Mayweathers and Golden Boy Promotions. But some detractors are still riding on the issue that Pacquiao did not submit to prove that he’s clean through the random drug testing.

Contrary to what Pacquiao’s detractors are trying to imply, it can be remembered that Pacquiao himself agreed to have himself tested for whatever Performance Enhancing Drugs (PED) except to an extent of drawing blood which could cause his weakening or losing his strength, stamina, and power advantage over Floyd Mayweather Jr. (which could very well be the reason why Mayweather Jr. wants to push through this extensive random blood extraction on Pacquiao).

Pacquiao’s claim that blood testing will weaken him has its basis on other athletes such as the great Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell who was upset with the Olympic drug testing procedure before competing in the men’s 100-metre final. Asafa Powell said that the drugs testers did too much blood extractions on him in the Beijing Olympics. He said that there were more testings done than is necessary few days before the men’s 100 metre championship.

Asafa said:
“I accept how important it is but they’re really down on my case. I got pretty upset two days ago because since I have been here, they have tested me four times. They’ve taken so much blood from us we’re going to be very weak before the final.”

Based on this premise, it would appear that Pacquiao detractors implies that Pacquiao is guilty of taking PED if not tested, but Pacquiao is willing to be blood tested only up to what is necessary and would not weaken him. Floyd Mayweather Jr. however is so unnecessarily firm on pushing for the random uncontrolled blood extraction for an undisclosed and rather interesting reason…

But since the present situation indicates that Floyd Mayweather Jr. & Co. will be facing Pacquiao’s lawsuit, Pacquiao can still prove to everybody and his fans that he’s clean by facing another opponent and do the initiative to undergo blood and urine test. Only this time, it will only be to the extent of whatever is necessary yet beyond doubts unlike Floyd Mayweather Jr. wants to insist. This way, Pacquiao wins by putting the defamers like Mayweathers & Co. where they belong through lawsuit, and still prove to the public especially his fans that he’s clean.

Arroyo

As we the Filipino people continuously learn and grow more mature about our democracy, we also continue to struggle to fight and prevent it from being taken away from us in so many ways possible. Even in means of extremely concealed deception and treason from which a majority of ordinary citizen may not notice without those who can help them uncover the CLEAR AND PRESENT threat to our democracy.

To share some of these cases, bellow is a theory of how such could come about and that such plot can be a potential threat to the freedom of the Filipino people. Kudos to Toto for such a clever theory that can bring up the guard of each and every ordinary Filipino to prevent any threat to their freedom.

Read on and be enlightened.

***********************

An analysis, in the wake of the Ampatuan murders, by Bertini “Toto” Causing, a member of the board of the National Press Club of the Philippines and also legal consultant for the National Press Club. Mr Causing is columnist both of Hataw and Police Files Tonight. With the kind permission of Paul Brinkley-Rogers.

ANALYSIS: You must know that Norberto Gonzales as Defense Secretary is a “terror” operator and if he is to work with political operator Ronaldo Puno, they become a dreaded pair.
Remember that Gonzales came from National Intelligence Security Agency, from where came the Vidal Doble who taped Garcillano’s talks with Gloria. Also remember that Puno (the bad one) was instrumental in making Miriam Santiago lose to FVR and in Garci operations in Mindanao .

You must also know that before the Ampatuan massacre, there were hell-bent planning sessions on how Gloria could possibly hold over, de facto or de jure.

They were looking at how they can foment war in Muslim areas to have a justification for sinister plots. Instead of launching war against MILF and MNLF which is expensive, what Gonzales did was to make “chismis” circulating between two possible warring clans.

The timing was perfect because Datu Andal Sr. was so worried how he can stay in power because of the three-term limit. Andal Sr. even went to the Comelec in the Province of Maguindanao to ask what should he do to enable him to run again for the 2010 elections.

A “bobo” Comelec official advised him to take a leave.. Another Comelec official advised him to resign. Confused, Andal Sr. went to Malacanang and asked an Arroyo confidante what to do. And Andal was told that the only way for him to hold on to power is to prevent elections there from happening. And he was advised to do what is necessary.

I do not know what was the advice; but I surmise that he was egged on not to give in to the Mangudadatus who were hell bent on grabbing power from him. In short, “binatirya” or “tsinismis patalikod ang mga Mangudadatu kay Andal na aagawin ang poder sa kanila.” And once the power is taken over, the Mangudadatus would take revenge for the earlier raids done on them resulting in seizure of firearms. Obsessed with desire to keep power revved up by “chismis”, the Ampatuans harbored deep hatred and extreme fear of losing power. And to ensure that no election shall occur, the killings should be done with extreme brutality to justify “martial law,” a condition when no election can be held in the province.

They were only looking at killing and burying to nowhere the Mangudadatus and families so that they would only be recorded as missing and would be charged against the rebels or Abu Sayyaf, not thinking they would be including 30 journalists in their plan for they did not think that Mangudadatu would ask for the help of media men.. And if there would be martial law, the Ampatuans stay in power under the hold-over principle.

But their game plot failed during the execution. Thank God: before they knew it, Toto Mangudadatu was able to know the abduction because his wife was able to call him up, prompting Toto Mangudadatu to call for Army assistance; the soldiers responded quick enough that forced the killers to escape, even though the other victims were not yet buried, leading to the discovery of the plan; thus, the execution failed.

The original plot was just to make it appear that the victims disappeared mysteriously so that it can be blamed to heightened rebellion that would justify attacks on MILF which, in turn, would justify martial law. Until here, I believe I have answered now the question why it should be as brutal as this. It was the Ampatuans who did the act and planned the act. The Gloria government only happened to have benefited from it to justify martial rule. What would be the net effect when martial law gains momentum in Maguindanao? It will embolden the Gloria machines to do the same in other Muslim provinces: (a) Wahab Akbar’s family vs Gerry Salappudin’s in Basilan; (b) Sakur Tan clan vs Tupay Loong clan in Sulu; (c) Jaafar clan vs opponents in Tawi-Tawi; (d) Dimaporo clan in Lanao Norte against a challenging clan; and (e) Many clans in Lanao Sur.’If Norberto Gonzales would have his way, he wanted all of them to fight each other to justify martial law in the rest of Muslim provinces. Remember that the total number of votes in these provinces is substantially big enough to cause suspension of proclamation of winners in Presidential, Vice-Presidential and Senatorial races. So that when proclamation cannot be had and it will be aggravated and prolonged by creative petitions and protests to be filed before the Comelec, the Speaker of the House (Gloria) would act as Acting President. Why? Since there would be no president, vice president and senators who would be proclaimed, the Speaker takes over under the Constitution. Gloria would argue that the 12 present senators cannot choose a Senate President because it needs at least 13 votes to elect the Senate President.

Another plus or bonus for them: the House of Representatives will approve to extend martial law by means of them voting together with the Senators where the senator’s vote is only one. A dummy petition shall be filed to question the act of “voting jointly” by means of outnumbering the Senators; and hoping the Gloria-appointees- dominated Supreme Court would rule that “voting jointly” means lumping together the senators and the congressmen and each of them has only ONE VOTE.

And when the Supreme Court would go Gloria’s way, they would now implement House Resolution 1109 calling for the senators and congressmen to “vote jointly” for a CON-ASS to pave the way for a parliamentary government. This PLUS or BONUS may happen before or after the 2010 elections. If it happens after elections, the picture that you would see is that the leading candidates for president, vice-president and senators cannot be proclaimed because their margin of leads can still be overturned by the total votes in areas where voting would be deferred till eternity by Martial Law.
So that this is a GRIM POSSIBILITY.
Patriotically yours,
Toto Causing

An earlier e-mail to Mr Brinkley-Rogers by Mr Causing, which first appeared at a Pinoy discussion group online. Please feel free to circulate my analysis as you wish. I do not have any reason for me to be afraid of getting known as the author of this piece. To make this known the farthest it can and to the largest number of people possible, the better it is for the Philippines and the Filipinos. This analysis becomes all the more necessary to be known because of the falsity and illogical premises relied on in placing Maguindanao province under the state of martial law. The manifestations displayed yesterday by Gloria & her minions show burning intention to pursue martial law are getting bolder. It now appears to be bordering on clear and present danger to democracy and the Filipino people. Obama and Hillary must know this to warn Gloria not to proceed with the sinister plot. Why will the Gloria cliche claim there is rebellion while stating at the same time in the premises of martial law proclamation that the territories being held by the rebel Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) shall be respected?

To make this clear, let me quote the proclamation: “Sec. 1: There is hereby declared a state of martial law in the province of Maguindanao except for the identified areas of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front as referred to in the implementing operational guidelines of the GRP-MILF agreement on the General Cessation of Hostilities. “ Moreover, MILF has been there existing and campaigning actively for more than a decade now yet in not one period in the past has martial law been proclaimed. In other words, it is very clear in the proclamation that the Gloria Arroyo Government is not referring to the MILF as the reason of rebellion that necessitates martial law. By deduction, it means that the Gloria administration is treating, no matter how illogical, the massacre of about 20 women, two lady lawyers and 32 journalists as an act of rebellion. As such, they are treating the suspected perpetrators of the goriest-ever massacre as “rebels.” True, Department of Justice Secretary Agnes Devanadera announced that the charges they were filing against the Ampatuans are “rebellion.” This was confirmed when television reports showed interviews of Army officers stating that they were arresting the Ampatuans for rebellion. Is this not out of syntax when the purpose of the brutal killings were not to topple the duly-constituted government?]

Is this not revolting to conscience to treat them as rebels when it is very clear there has been no intention to deprive the government of the right to assert authority in any place in Maguindanao?

Is it not clear that the purpose of the massacre was only to scare out or eliminate possible opponents in the upcoming elections for governor of the province in May of 2010?
Is it not clear that the Ampatuans had a clear intention to run for the elective posts up for grabs in that elections and as such there is no intention to deprive the national government to exercise authority in Maguindanao?

Is it not clear that rebellion is an offense against the government only?
Is it not clear that the massacre as committed, assuming to have been committed by the Ampatuans, is an offense against the persons of the victims, that the state’s interest in giving justice to massacre victims is only to keep its moral obligation to keep the peace and assuage the revolting conscience?
]
In sum, it is very clear that there is no rebellion.

And the fact that the Gloria minions are insisting that there is rebellion and in fact arrested the Ampatuans on rebellion charges means my analysis is jibing with the clear intention to place Maguindanao under martial law to achieve the purpose of foiling the holding of elections in this place.

The situation of danger against Democracy and the People is CLEAR AND PRESENT.
So please, Sir Paul, disseminate to the largest possible audience my analysis along with this email message of mine to you.
Patriotically yours,

Story

The Maguindanao massacre occurred on the morning of November 23, 2009, in the Maguindanao province on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. The victims were trying to obtain a certificate of candidacy for Esmael Mangudadatu, vice mayor of Buluan town. Mangudadatu was challenging Andal Ampatuan, Jr. (son of the former Maguindanao governor Datu Andal Ampatuan) in the Maguindanao governatorial election, part of the national elections in 2010. Those killed included Mangudadatu’s wife, two sisters, lawyers, aides, and journalists, which report says that the manner of killing was so brutal that the slaughter was made giving several decapitation amongst victims, raped some of the women, and tortured them before killing them.

As of November 24, 46 deaths were confirmed by Lt. Col. Rolando Nerona of the Philippine Army. Reporters Without Borders announced that at least 12 of the victims were journalists, including several members of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, making this the deadliest such incident in the history of news media.

Philippine president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo responded to the news of the massacre by declaring a state of emergency in Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat and Cotabato City. Speaker of the House Prospero Nograles called on the police to quickly identify the perpetrators of the massacre and disarm private militias. The Filipino Department of Justice created a panel of special prosecutors to handle cases arising from the massacre.
In the aftermath, Nueva Ecija Rep. Edno Joson said the massacre might affect, or even lead to the cancellation of, the scheduled 2010 presidential elections. Candidates in the election condemned the massacre, as did the European Union.

Ampatuan Jr., accompanied by Jesus Dureza, presidential adviser on Mindanao, arrived in General Santos at 12:25 p.m., clad in polo-shirt, long pants, black jacket and his face covered with a turban. He was handed over to Justice Secretary Agnes Devanadera who would bring the local official to Manila onboard a private plane.

Witness said that all the slain women were raped. The 100 armed men never asked why, they just followed orders from Andal Ampatuan, Jr. He mentioned that they were not able to finish the job of burying all the dead and their vehicles because soldiers were coming. The witness said that their group do have connections with military in reference to the heinous crime committed.

WITNESS: ‘WE JUST FOLLOWED ORDERS’
A man who says he was a witness to Monday’s massacre in the southern Philippines has told Al Jazeera how he was ordered to kill members of a rival political clan – including women and children – and to make sure no evidence was left behind.

Thoughts

How does these things affect the people as citizens and the country as a nation? How about you? How does it affect you? Can you ensure you and your family’s and friends’ safety under such abusive authorities? What can you do? What WILL you do?

Common people’s ignoring responses reminds me of how fanaticism developed and ruled the people.

“Very few people were true Nazis, but many enjoyed the return of German pride, and many more were too busy to care. I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools.

So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen. Then, before we knew it, they owned us, and we had lost control.” – a common German citizen

Communist Russia was comprised of Russians who just wanted to live in peace, yet the Russian Communists were responsible for the murder of about 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant.

China’s huge population was peaceful as well, but Chinese communists managed to kill a staggering 70 million people.

The average Japanese individual prior to World War II was not a war-mongering sadist. Yet, Japan murdered and slaughtered its way across South East Asia in an orgy of killing that included the systematic murder of 12 million Chinese civilians; most killed by sword, shovel, and bayonet.

And who can forget Rwanda , which collapsed into butchery. Could it not be said that the majority of Rwandans were peace loving’?

History lessons are often incredibly simple and blunt, yet for all our powers of reason we often miss the most basic and uncomplicated of points:

The hard quantifiable fact is that the peaceful majority, the ‘silent majority,’ is cowed and extraneous.

As for us who watch it all unfold, we must pay attention to the only group that counts; the fanatics who threaten our way of life.

Anyone who doubts that the issue is serious and just disregard it is contributing to the passiveness that allows the problems to expand.

The first thing the fanatics will do to the ‘ silent majority ‘ is to disarm them… What will you do?

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1950 ‘ s, 60 ‘ s, 70 ‘ s and early 80 ‘ s !!

First, some of us survived being born to mothers who did not have an OB-Gyne and drank San Miguel Beer while they carried us. While pregnant, they took cold or cough medicine, a te isaw, and didn ‘ t worry about diabetes.

Then after all that trauma, our baby cribs were made of hard wood covered with lead-based paints, pati na yung walker natin, matigas na kahoy din at wala pang gulong. We had no soft cushy cribs that play music, no disposable diapers (lampin lang), and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, no kneepads , sometimes wala pang preno yung bisikleta.

As children, we would ride in hot un-airconditioned buses with wooden seats (yung JD bus na pula), or cars with no airconditioning & no seat belts (ngayon lahat may aircon na) Riding on the back of a carabao on a breezy summer day was considered a treat. (ngayon hindi na nakakakita ng kalabaw ang mga bata)

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle purchased from 711 (minsan straight from the faucet or poso) We shared one soft drink bottle with four of our friends, and NO ONE actually died from this. We ate rice with Star margarine, drank raw eggs straight from the shell, and drank softdrinks with real sugar in it (hindi diet Coke), but we weren’t sick or overweight kasi nga…… WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, and get back when the streetlights came on. Sarap mag patintero, tumbang preso, habulan at taguan. No one was able to reach us all day (di uso ang cellphone, walang beepers ). And yes, we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our wooden trolleys (yung bearing ang gulong) or plywood slides out of scraps and then ride down the street , only to find out we forgot the brakes! After hitting the sidewalk or falling into a canal (sewage channel) a few times, we learned to solve the problem ourselves with our bare & dirty hands .

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo’ s, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 100 channels on cable, no DVD movies, no surround stereo, no IPOD ‘ s, no cell phones, no computers, no Internet, no chat rooms, and no Friendsters. …… …WE HAD REAL FRIENDS and we went outside to actually talk and play with them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no stupid lawsuits from these accidents. The only rubbing we get was from our friends with the words..masakit ba? pero pag galit yung kalaro mo,ang sasabihin sa iyo…beh buti nga ! We played marbles (jolens) in the dirt, washed our hands just a little and ate dirty ice cream & fish balls… we were not afraid of getting germs in our stomachs.

We had to live with homemade guns “gawa sa kahoy, tinali ng rubberband, sumpit, tirador at kung anu-ano pa na pwedeng magkasakitan. ..pero masaya pa rin ang lahat. We made up games with sticks (syatong), and cans (tumbang preso) and although we were told they were dangerous, wala naman tayong binulag o napatay.paminsan minsan may nabubukulan lang.

We walked, rode bikes, or took tricycles to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them to jump out the window! Mini basketball teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn’t pass had to learn to deal with the disappointment. Wala yang mga childhood depression at damaged self-esteem ek-ek na yan. Ang pikon, talo. Ang magulang ay nandoon lang para tingnan kung ayos lang ang mga bata, hindi para makialam at makipag-away sa ibang parents.

That generation of ours has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers, creative thinkers and successful professionals ever! They are the CEO’s, Engineers, Doctors and Military Generals of today.. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had failures, successes, and responsibilities. We learned from our mistakes the hard way. You might want to share this with others who’ve had the luck to grow up as real kids. We were lucky indeed. And if you like, forward it to your kids too, so they will know how brave their parents were. It kind of makes you wanna go out and climb a tree, doesn’t it?!

Springs breaks down Manny. He makes comparisons to the real Sugar Ray and Ali. And you cannot refute him.

DECONSTRUCTING MANNY
By Springs Toledo

Manny Pacquiao: I’m just [an] ordinary fighter…

Freddie Roach (interrupting): –You’re not ordinary.

Manny Pacquiao: Sorry about that, master.

“He finds gaps,” said Emanuel Steward after Manny Pacquiao stopped Miguel Cotto in the twelfth round. Those three words mirror the words of a far older, far more legendary war tactician: Sun Tzu. “Strike at their gaps,” The Art of War asserted two thousand years ago, “attack when they are lax, don’t let the enemy figure out how to prepare.” The second knockdown of Cotto illustrated this theory. Cotto, a conventional boxer-puncher, was hit in the fourth round by an uppercut from the left side that went inside and underneath his guard, exploding off the side of his chin. Pacquiao found a gap, capitalized on the momentary carelessness of an onrushing opponent, and spent the rest of the fight exploding every potential solution Cotto thought he had.

“When you are going to attack nearby make it look as if you are going to go a long way,” Sun Tzu said, “when you are going to attack far away, make it look as if you are going just a short distance.” Pacquiao seems to be moving out when he’s coming in and coming in when he’s moving out. He exploits expectations with illusions. He “draws them in” and then “takes them by confusion.” Trainer Freddie Roach, himself a former professional boxer, agrees that Pacquiao is “very hard to read.” Pacquiao continues punching when his opponent expects a pause, his angles are bizarre, and he is often not where he is expected to be after a combination. Due to such unorthodoxies, this southpaw is a master of destroying the timing and rhythm of a conventional fighter. He is similar to Joe Calzaghe in that regard. Mikkel Kessler said that Calzaghe “ruins your boxing.” Indeed, Pacquiao does worse than that.

While a disruptive boxer like Calzaghe spills ink all over your blueprint and laughs about it, Pacquiao ruins your blueprint, but then adds injury to insult by crashing the drafting table over your head.

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MANNY
Pacquiao has athletic gifts that translate well in the ring: disruptive rhythm, timing, and speed, all financed by shocking power that belies his featherweight frame. As if this weren’t enough, his whiskers safely absorbed the shock of Cotto’s left hooks. He was never hurt, which raises eyebrows. Manny, we must remember, was exchanging punches in a division forty pounds north of the one he began in. And he reveled in it, he invited it, even snarling at times and standing disdainfully in the final stanzas to challenge the manhood of the retreating Puerto Rican. Roberto Duran, 58, watched from the crowd. His coal-black eyes remembering the night he dethroned another welterweight who thought he could outgun a smaller man. Duran watched Pacquiao’s black hair flying with the force of his blows, his beard paying unintentional tribute. A smile, once sinister, betrayed his lips.

Despite the glory heaped on him by a celebrity-starved public and an island nation eager for eminence, Pacquiao is not the flawless fighter that Duran was when he handed Sugar Ray Leonard his first defeat. Pacquiao’s humanity can be sensed if not seen in his nervousness as battle commences. It takes him a round or two to find his rhythm and gauge his distance and timing. Before that happens he is prone to reach in, get off balance in range, and will often leave windows open for counters. After that happens, his opponent, any opponent, is in peril.

He can be controlled, particularly by welterweights, but it will take a trainer and a fighter who are willing to give up conventional strategies and think out of the box. Convention is broken down by revolution, and Manny Pacquiao fights like a revolution.

Alas, even the trainer who recognizes the need for a counter-revolutionary strategy is faced with another problem –the trainer in the other corner:

Freddie Roach. The formidable Freddie Roach.

Roach has Parkinson’s disease, which has burdened him with tremors, slurring, and odd pauses during conversations. Its symptoms can be as disconcerting to conventional conversationalists as Manny Pacquiao’s style is to conventional fighters; but his disability also gives him an aura of alien brilliance like Stephen Hawking.

It has had no effect on his knack for strategy.

Roach did well not to tamper with Pacquiao’s unorthodoxy. He streamlined it and added balance, deliberate feints, angles, defense, and a two-fisted attack. Like Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao has a foundation in fundamentals. Unlike Mayweather, Pacquiao’s lessons occurred later in his career, while Floyd’s were drilled into him as a small child. Also unlike Mayweather who claims to disdain strategy, Manny enters the ring with a master plan or three. Sun Tzu emphasized this: “Victorious warriors win first and then go to war.” Roach spends hours and days and weeks and months in study. He deconstructs his opponent and finds patterns –“habits” as he calls them, to exploit. Then he teaches Manny to “see it as [he] sees it.”

At times, the eyes of Freddie Roach seem to focus on a higher plane inaccessible to anyone else. Perhaps he communes with the ghost of Eddie Futch. Futch was his mentor, and was among the greatest trainers of the 20th century. Futch sparred with Joe Louis and learned his trade in the company of master boxers like Holman Williams. He was the strategist behind the first defeat of Muhammad Ali by Joe Frazier, the second defeat of Ali by Ken Norton, Riddick Bowe’s defeat of the undefeated Evander Holyfield, and Montell Griffin’s disqualification win over the undefeated Roy Jones. Freddie Roach learned at his knee. Manny Pacquiao learned at Freddie’s.

The most popular boxer in the world today was catapulted into stardom after he defeated Oscar De La Hoya and then Ricky Hatton. Serious boxing fans know the truth. De La Hoya and Hatton were simply two candles on a cake already baked between 2003 and 2008 by great Mexicans from the lower weight divisions: Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, and Juan Manuel Marquez. These are the men who tried him in fire much like Murderers’ Row tried Archie Moore in the 1940s and Philadelphia tried Marvelous Marvin Hagler in the 1970s. Pacquiao has evolved bloodily into a complete fighter and then some. He is an experienced, natural athlete with power that exponentially rises with weight. He has a style that is as confusing as a hall of mirrors and as difficult to solve as Chinese math. He is a willing student with an expanding set of skills. Behind him stands a trainer with a direct link to Eddie Futch who was a product of boxing’s golden decade and rubbed shoulders with many gods of war. Manny’s pugilistic pedigree summons the gold of yesterday to overcome the iron of today.

HAIL MANNY, FULL OF GRACE
Boxing is a character sport first and a skills sport second. Manny’s character was formed in a background that is ideal for a fighter –a background set in the kind of third world poverty that Americans have not known for seventy years, but a background known to spawn fighters in back alleys amid broken bottles and broken dreams. Manny ran away from home at fourteen to spare his mother one more mouth to feed. He exchanged real poverty for worse poverty –in an act of sacrifice. This fighter has not only suffered, he also understood and embraced self-denial at early adolescence.

The toughest sport in the world is easy for someone like him. Pacquiao has something to fight for as only a poor man can, for self, for family, for country. He has the discipline to do it, and he has the perspective to transcend it. The Sweet Science is meaningful to him; his participation in it is an expression of love and loyalty, of self-actualization. So he approaches battle with joy.

And that isn’t all.

Manny believes that the hand of God himself is on his shoulder. Cynical secularism may scoff at such ancient notions, but irreverence is irrelevant here. Manny believes this –utterly. And it gives him an edge in that he is completely self-possessed and palpably unconcerned with the risks of the ring. He goes not only willingly, but happily. Throughout history, like-minded people have strode confidently into lion’s dens, climbed into kamikaze cockpits, blown themselves up at market places, sang while burning at a stake, and volunteered to die first at Nazi death camps to spare strangers. Pacquiao’s religiosity is that kind of powerful. It is a major reason why he smiles and waves on his way to battle dragons.

Boxing fans take note: his frame of mind was shared by Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali.

Emanuel Steward’s assertion that the thirty-year-old welterweight champion, now 50-3-2, belongs “up there” with Ali and Robinson was half-wrong. When Robinson was thirty, he was defeated once in 131 bouts and went on to finish his career with the scalps of eighteen world champions hanging from his belt. Manny isn’t near that. He is a typhoon blowing over structures less sturdy than those built in the golden era of boxing. But remember, he isn’t finished yet.

Like the legends before him, Manny Pacquiao sees himself as a man of destiny… a patriot fighting for a flag, a Christian laughing at lions… Such men are rarely taken down by anything except time and hubris. They are larger than their foes even when they are not.

Such men are larger than themselves.
